Proposed Analysis: | A well known sequlae of brain trauma is axonal injury. Traumatic axonal injury can lead to neurodegeneration and persistent neuroinflammation, which is associated with abnormal diffusion of misfolded neurodegenerative proteins along axons. The long-term consequences can manifest itself macroscopically as white matter hyperintensity lesions, best measured with 3D FLAIR. However, white matter hyperintensities also occur as a result of aging and cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes. We hypothesize that the topology of white matter lesions in chronic TBI subjects will differ from those in age/sex matched cognitively normal subjects. We will segment white matter hyperintensities from the 3D FLAIR. We will spatially coregister 3D FLAIR scans to MNI 152 space and compare lesion distributions across the two cohorts. |
